An iPhone app for cats

Sounds pitched and paced for cat ears.

A breathing purr, a mother’s heartbeat, trills, birdsong and a band most adults can’t hear, generated live on your phone. Watch your cat, rate what works and keep what they love.

Purr Room’s Listen screen playing Purr and two more sounds for a cat named Pelėda, with a live pulse line, volume and sleep timer controls, and a hearing map comparing your range with a cat’s.

Eleven sounds, no recordings

Three families, made live on the phone.

Every sound is synthesized as it plays, so it never loops the same way twice. The calm sounds borrow from studies of music made for cats: purring tempos and sliding notes about an octave above the human voice.

Calm

For vet trips, storms and bedtime.

  • PurrA breathing purr, 26 Hz pulse, 180 to 700 Hz
  • Mother’s HeartbeatA steady lub-dub at 130 bpm
  • Kitten LullabyPlusSliding notes, 587 to 1175 Hz
  • Soft HushPlusBrown noise under 900 Hz, for fireworks

Attract and play

Short sessions that end with a real toy.

  • Trill CallThe rolled “mrrp” mother cats use
  • BirdsongChirp clusters, 3 to 6.5 kHz
  • PspspsPlusHigh bursts, 4.5 to 9 kHz
  • Mouse in LeavesPlusSqueaks and rustle that move left and right

Cat-only band

Above most adult hearing, inside theirs.

  • Ultra SqueaksPlusRodent-style squeaks
  • Ultra CricketPlusInsect-like pulse trains
  • Ultra RustlePlusTiny scratching bursts
The Calm list: Purr and Mother’s Heartbeat playing with level sliders and Loves it, Meh and Nope ratings, with Kitten Lullaby and Soft Hush ready to play.

Made for your cat

Rate what works. Keep what they love.

Add your cat’s breed and age and Purr Room marks a few sounds to try first. Kittens, seniors, chatty breeds and shy cats respond to different things.

Give each sound a few tries, then mark it Loves it, Meh or Nope. Suggestions move on to sounds you haven’t rated, and the big play button starts what played last.

  • A profile for each cat. Ratings and suggestions stay separate.
  • Mixes. Fireworks night, Vet trip, Bedtime and Zoomies are built in. Save your own levels with Plus.
  • Sleep timer. Sounds fade out when the time is up.
  • Siri and Shortcuts. Say “Play Purr in Purr Room” or “Calm my cat with Purr Room”.
The cat-only band with its floor set to 18.5 kHz, a check tone button, and Ultra Squeaks and Ultra Cricket playing.

The cat-only band

A band only cats can hear.

Cats hear up to about 64 kHz. Most adults stop near 15 to 17 kHz. Purr Room puts squeaks, crickets and rustle in that gap, and the hearing map shows where every playing sound sits.

You choose where the band starts, from 16 kHz up. Play the check tone: if you can hear it, raise the floor until you can’t.

Phone speakers often fade above 18 to 20 kHz, so on some phones the band plays quietly or barely at all. Keep these sounds short and quiet: dogs, rodents and young people may hear them too.

Diagram on a log scale. Calm sounds sit between 40 Hz and 1.2 kHz, play sounds between 520 Hz and 9.5 kHz, and the cat-only band starts at the floor you set (16 kHz here). The tinted zone is above most adult hearing.
The screen hunt: a field mouse crossing a dark screen, with the hold-to-exit button top left and the catch count top right.

Screen hunt

Prey that moves, with sound that follows.

A light dot, a field mouse and a firefly dart, freeze and drift across the screen. Each one’s sound pans from speaker to speaker as it moves, and a catch plays a squeak.

Lay the phone flat and turn on Do Not Disturb. Paws tap; people touch and hold the corner button to leave.

The light dot is free. The field mouse and the firefly come with Plus.

How it works

Start near silent.

  1. Tell it who’s listening.Breed and age decide which sounds to try first.
  2. Play a sound, quietly.Raise it slowly while you watch your cat. Stop if ears flatten, the tail lashes or they hide.
  3. Watch, then rate.Cats get used to new sounds. Judge after a few tries, not the first.
  4. Mix it and leave it on.Layer sounds, set each level and add a sleep timer that fades out.
First run: a getting-started checklist (add your cat, play a sound quietly, rate the reaction) above a play button for Purr and the hearing map. The How it works guide in the app: tell it who’s listening, start near silent, watch then rate, mix it and leave it on, play the screen hunt.
